Audiobooks
Audiobooks continue to grow in popularity. The American Publishers Association reports that audiobook sales have experienced double digit growth every year between 2011 – 2022. This sales growth was fueled by a 10-fold increase in the number of audiobooks published in the U.S. – more than 74,000 in 2022 compared to 7200 in 2011. It is notable that audiobook revenue passed ebook revenue for the first time in 2019, and the gap continues to get larger. Today more than 53% of U.S. adults have said that they have listened to an audiobook. It is expected that the audiobook market will continue to grow, driven by the convenience of playing audiobooks from smartphones and tablets.
The Keys to Great Audiobook Narration
The narrator is key to producing a successful audiobook. The narrator is the storyteller. They must know the story intimately before recording it. The narrator understands the author’s tone as well as the roles, personalities and physical traits of the characters in the story. After bringing the listener into the story, the narrator needs to dissolve into the background of the listener’s attention by bringing to life the voice or voices that the author heard in their heads when they wrote the story. The goal is to keep the listener immersed in the story, held spellbound by images formed in their heads by the author’s words, conveyed by the voice skills of the narrator.
